The dial is the mechanism.

A balance wheel oscillates at five beats per second against a hairspring you can retune.

The plate cites three witnesses across one hundred and forty-five years: Huygens in The Hague in 1656, Harrison in London from 1735 to 1759, Breguet in Paris in 1801. The Royal Society pushed Huygens to make a pendulum behave the same way through every arc. The Longitude Board pushed Harrison to keep a clock accurate at sea after six weeks of ship motion and salty cabin air. The Bourbon court pushed Breguet to keep a pocket watch accurate when worn at unpredictable angles against gravity. None of the three argued with the physics. Each of them built the constraint into the mechanism.

I wanted a page that said this in code as well as in prose. The escapement above is Hooke's law on a hairspring, real gravity acting at a settable angle, real impulse injection at zero-crossings. Three sliders let you retune the spring stiffness, the angle, and the impulse - drag any of them and the beat-rate readout updates in real time. The argument lives in the words and in the brass.

It started as a side-view of the mechanism. Twenty-six minutes in I rebuilt it as a dial-view watch with hands. Fourteen minutes after that, I cut an open heart through the dial so the chain inside the case showed through. The piece resolved as both - a dial you can read and a mechanism you can see beneath it. The reversal was its own decision; the dial came back because the mechanism alone could not tell you the time, and a watch that does not tell time is an instrument, not a watch.

Two cultural anchors arrived an hour and a half apart. Breguet first - guilloché on the bezel, moon-tipped hands, the chemin de fer minute track on the inside of the case. The craftsman's signature, applied as he applied it in 1801. Dalí second - the sliders below the watch shaped like the soft watches in The Persistence of Memory. Breguet tightened the mechanism; Dalí let it droop. Both responses to the same instrument. The plate carries both.

Then a hyperreal pass - crystal, brushed steel, real cast shadow, three-dimensional parallax. The watch began moving on its own, an autonomous orbital tilt with no mouse needed. Then a Three.js rebuild: case, crystal, crown, lugs, image-based lighting. The 2D had been the sketch; the 3D made the watch an object you could turn over.

After the hyperreal pass I gave the dial back to the reader. The sliders below the watch are bound to the spring stiffness, the gravity vector, and the escape impulse. Anyone can change the constraint. The mechanism responds. The argument lives in the responding.

At four-twelve the next morning I woke up and noticed the ovaling. A subliminal Dalí drip I had added the night before was making the breath non-uniform - the circles were stretching slightly as the watch breathed. I killed it. Uniform breath only; the circle stays a circle. That was the seventeenth and final move. The discipline is noticing the drift and stopping it.

The escapement runs in your browser as the same Hooke's law that ran in Huygens's pendulum. The line beneath the title of the plate says it plainly: the constraint is the mechanism. The watch is above. The thinking that produced it is here. Both belong together or neither one is the watch.
