Built to outlive the maker.

PostureCraft

A religion that built things so well the things outlived the religion. Nineteen villages between New York and Kentucky. The flat broom, the circular saw, the packaged seed, the round stone barn, the ladderback chair, and "Simple Gifts" — all came out of the same theology of work. The Society is functionally extinct. The work is at the Met.

Mother Ann Lee was the unschooled daughter of a Manchester blacksmith. She sailed for colonial New York in 1774 with eight followers and cleared land at Niskayuna the year after the Boston Tea Party. By her death in 1784, the community had survived. By 1840 there were nineteen villages and roughly six thousand members from Maine to Kentucky.

The terms were severe. Celibacy, communal property, full equality between women and men in a country that did not allow women to own land, public confession, separation from the world. Once admitted, the world outside ended. What replaced it was a discipline of work.

Hands to work, hearts to God. The motto held for two and a half centuries. The objects produced under it — chairs, baskets, barns, looms, seed packets, brooms, songs — were made under the assumption that the maker would be unknown to whoever inherited the artifact. Function as devotion, with no signature.

Pleasant Hill, Kentucky — an hour's drive from Louisville — ran as a Shaker community from 1806 to 1910. Thirty-four buildings remain, restored as a National Historic Landmark. The closest surviving evidence in any direction that artifacts built without ego outlast everything around them.
