What SEO costs
in Louisville.
Two of ten local firms publish a price at all. Across the seven published monthly figures that trace to a named firm and page, the median is three thousand dollars a month. Here is the whole picture, including where every number came from.

- The market
Small, quiet,
and winnable.
Louisville is not a hard search market. It is a thin one. A June 2026 pull of the local term set found eight of eighteen tracked keywords at a difficulty of thirty or below, carrying roughly 1,120 searches a month between them, with costs per click from about five dollars to nineteen. One branding term with real volume measured at a difficulty of zero, which is another way of saying nobody has claimed it.
What the established local firms have is breadth, not difficulty. Eleven agency domains in that same pull each ranked for between 127 and 150 organic keywords. That is a large surface built over years, and it is hard to match on volume. It is not hard to beat on any single reachable term, which is the only thing a small operator needs.
The pricing side is stranger. Ten firms were checked in September 2026 and only two published a monthly figure anywhere on their own site. A third publishes fixed-fee engagements and says plainly that it does not do retainers. Everyone else quotes after a call. That is not a criticism, it is just the market condition a buyer is walking into, and it is why this page carries numbers at all.
- Where the numbers came from
Checked twice,
and one failed.
An earlier pass at the local pricing produced a median of $2,500 a month from eight figures. When each figure was re-fetched from the selling firm's own page, only three of the eight could be traced to a named firm at all. Two of them appeared on none of the eleven sites checked.
The sample was rebuilt from the seven monthly figures that could be sourced. Median three thousand dollars, mean $3,357. The earlier numbers are not used anywhere on this site, and this paragraph exists because a price you cannot trace is not a benchmark.
The same standard runs through everything published here. A figure carries the source it was read on and the date it was read, or it does not get printed.

What does SEO cost in Louisville?
Most local firms will not say. Of ten Louisville-reachable firms checked in September 2026, only two published a monthly price anywhere on their own site. Across the seven published monthly figures that could be traced to a named firm and page, the median was three thousand dollars a month and the mean was $3,357. A third firm sells fixed-fee engagements instead and refuses retainers entirely. If a quote arrives with no published anchor behind it, that is normal here, and it is also why asking for the number in writing is reasonable.
Is Louisville a hard market to rank in?
Less than it looks. In a June 2026 pull of the local keyword set, eight of the eighteen tracked terms sat at a keyword difficulty of thirty or below, and one of them - a branding term with real monthly volume - measured at zero. Together those eight carry about 1,120 searches a month. That is a small market by national standards, which is exactly what makes it winnable: the terms are cheap to compete for, and the established local firms are ranking on breadth rather than on difficulty.
How long does it take?
On terms at this difficulty, months rather than quarters, and the honest answer is that nobody can promise a date. What can be promised is a kill signal: if ninety days of published work has not produced a top-three position on a term measuring under twenty difficulty, the approach is wrong and should change rather than continue on faith. I hold myself to that standard first.
Should I pay for ads or do SEO?
In this market the arbitrage is organic, at least first. Local search terms carry costs per click between roughly five and nineteen dollars, and a meaningful share of the paid competition is out-of-state agencies bidding on Louisville terms rather than local firms. Organic costs time instead of cash and compounds; paid buys immediate visibility at a price set by the other bidders. The sequence that makes sense for most small operators is content on the reachable terms first, then paid once there is something proven to point it at.
What about showing up in AI answers instead of Google?
It is now a separate question with a separate answer, and it is measurable. Google Search Console publishes a generative AI performance report showing how often a site appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out worldwide on 31 August 2026, and Bing Webmaster Tools has a public-preview report counting citations in AI-generated answers. Neither OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity nor Meta publishes anything equivalent for site owners. So part of the picture is free and official, and the rest has to be sampled with a tool.
How do I check whether an SEO firm is any good?
Ask for a term they rank for, then check it yourself in a private window. Ask what they will publish and when. Ask what number they charge and get it in writing. And ask what would make them tell you to stop paying them. A firm that can answer the last one is selling an outcome.
My own work is quoted once, after a short conversation. The free scan reads a site in about twenty seconds, with nothing to fill in but the URL. A companion page covers how AI engines describe a business.
